Smoked Old Fashioned Recipe

For a new twist on the Old Fashioned, try it smoked. Smoking this classic cocktail enhances the flavor. By placing food items under a bowl, like the orange peel and sugar cube for our Smoked Old Fashioned, you can infuse the smoke into the food by simply covering the bowl with plastic wrap to trap the smoke inside. This can be done two ways, either with a smoke infuser or by simply lighting the wood chips by hand.

Ingredients

  • 2 fl oz. whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2–3 dashes bitters
  • Hickory wood chips
  • Orange peel twist
  • 1 cherry
  • 1 large ice cube

Directions

Place the sugar cube and orange peel in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap.

If you have a smoke infuser, insert the tube from the smoke infuser (with the hickory wood chips) and fill the bowl with smoke. Cover with wrap, and let sit one minute. Repeat as desired to add extra smokiness.

If you choose not to use a smoke infuser, light the wood chips, lay them down near the glass, and cover the glass and wood chips with a large bowl to trap the smoke inside.

Next, place the sugar cube in a whiskey glass. Soak in the bitters and a little water. Mix until the sugar is dissolved. Add the ice cube and whiskey to the glass and stir.

Add the twist of orange peel and cherry.

If using a smoke infuser, cover the glass with plastic wrap. Insert the hose from the smoke infuser under the plastic and fill the glass with smoke. Let it sit one minute. Repeat as desired for extra smokiness.

Without a smoke infuser, cover the glass and the smoking wood chips under the large bowl to trap the smoke in. Let it sit one minute. Repeat as desired.
