The History of Valentine’s Day

Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day is not a holiday that was schemed up by Hallmark. The history of it all is actually quite romantic….

One legend goes back to the year 270 A.D. when Roman Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men in efforts to create better soldiers. Claudius assumed that men who weren’t emotionally attached made better soldiers than married men. Disagreeing with this law, a priest named Valentine, defied the emperor’s order and continued to secretly marry couples. After being discovered, Valentine was ordered to be executed. During his time in prison, he was visited by his jailor’s daughter and just before his execution, he wrote this woman a letter and signed it “From Your Valentine.”

Now, Valentine’s Day has certainly evolved over the times and with the help of society, big name card companies, commercialization, and last but not least; women, it has developed into what we know today……hearts, cards, chocolates, flowers, jewelry, and dinner. So on this whimsical holiday, you can find yourself celebrating one of two appealing holidays:

Single’s appreciation day is just around the corner. So what does that mean for single people out there? It means spending no money, no pressures of planning the perfect date, no confusion as to what gift to get your date or how extravagant the gift should be, no stress over buying a card or making one, no stress over writing your perfect sentiments in the card, not having to make dinner reservations one month in advance, not having to plan a weekend getaway, and ultimately, having a lot more money in your wallet.

Now, for all you couples out there, Valentine’s Day is also just around the corner. So do you know what that means for you? It means spending more money, a romantic evening with your sweetheart, the stress- I mean thrill of planning a fabulous night one month prior to the 14th, buying and receiving the perfect present, picking out the perfect card, expressing your love in words, dining at a crowded-but fancy, restaurant, going on a romantic weekend getaway, and ultimately, fewer bills in the wallet.

I know, I know…. both of these groups sound so tempting, it’s hard to choose. There may be Valentine’s Day cynics out there that think, ‘Valentine’s Day is completely arbitrary and contrived. I mean, who needs a random day in February to show their husbands or wives, girlfriends or boyfriends, that they love them.’ There may also be people out there that think, ‘who wants to be alone….I’d take a fake holiday over being single any day.’ Well, I guess we know which group they would choose.

Whatever the situation is, whoever you are, whatever group you’re in; whether you’re depressed or happy, feasting on lobster at a restaurant or feasting on pizza on your couch, whether you’re spending that day in misery or in love, in company or in solitude, remember, don’t take it so seriously! It’s supposed to be fun. It’s a whimsical holiday to be enjoyed by all, couple or not. If you’re single, who cares! Treat yourself! And if you’re in a relationship, who cares! The fate of your relationship does not ride on that one day! So everybody just have fun and let there be chocolate…. and shoes!

For the men out there who are stuck on what to get your Valentine, remember, as much as they love you, women have been having a love affair with shoes for a very long time now; don’t try to understand it. Whether you buy a pair of Jimmy Choos or Ariats, you can’t go wrong with shoes. Bootbarn.com has a great new selection of boots that anyone would love!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so don’t be caught empty handed on that special occasion. With the simple click of a mouse, you can have beautiful boots sent right to your doorstep. Seeing how Valentine’s Day is actually a legitimate holiday, don’t we all owe it to Saint Valentine to show our loved ones just how much we love them? And for the singles out there, with a great new pair of shoes, who needs a man? Or a woman?
