Christmas Is Over, Now What?
Every morning I wake up expecting a pile of presents waiting for me under the tree, only to be disappointed and wondering what happened and where did Christmas go? Is it over already? Now, looking back on Christmas morning, a thought occurred to me and it poses an interesting situation….
It’s approximately 8 o’clock in the morning on Christmas Day and my sister and I are the only ones awake, getting ready to make breakfast. Slowly, we hear voices upstairs and in anticipation of opening presents, we run upstairs to get everybody out of bed. As we’re running up the stairs, my boyfriend opens the door, looking like he fell out of bed, doesn’t say a word and sticks one finger in the air to silence us. He walks right past us down the stairs, lies down directly in front of the tree, and gathers three presents in his arms, ready to tear into them. Now luckily for him, he got everything he wanted for Christmas. But can you imagine the trauma that could have ensued if he hadn’t gotten what he had asked Santa for? And all that built up anticipation had gone to waste? I certainly wouldn’t want to cause that kind of trauma for anybody or be a witness to it.
Now, on Christmas morning, there are exactly three kinds of people. The ones that got exactly what they wanted for Christmas, the ones that got some of the things they wanted, and the ones that got completely screwed by Santa (no pun intended). For the last group of people out there, I can only imagine how you’re feeling because I got everything I wanted, and then some, and things I didn’t even know I wanted. But happy as I am over all of my presents, I empathize with all of you and offer some advice. I understand that in a perfect world, Christmas is about giving and not about receiving. But we don’t live in a perfect world because if we did, I’d be 5’8 and a size 2. So, as much as Christmas is about buying presents for other people, it’s also about getting what you want too. And do you want to know how to ensure that you do? Buy it for yourself! Sure, why can’t you give yourself a present for Christmas and who knows yourself better than you do. What better way to make sure that you get exactly what you want?
So remember next year when you’re in the shopping malls and you’re pushing your way through the crowds that it’s your holiday too. If your sister is worth waiting a half hour in line for, then you are certainly worth whatever purchase you make for yourself, guilt free. Whether you have to put your own name on your shopping list or if you have to shave a few dollars off of everybody else’s gift, I’m sure you’ll find a way to treat yourself. You can even buy the gift, wrap it before anybody else sees it, and write your name on the tag from Santa on it and no one would be the wiser. Now, my advice is in no way indicative of my actions this Christmas, but I may have to heed my own advice next year and buy myself something pretty. Why not? It’s my Christmas too!
So now you never have to be in group number 3 anymore because the power is in your own hands. If you wanted Tivo but got a VCR, buy it yourself! If you wanted a food processor but got a knife instead, go out and buy it yourself! If you wanted a new DVD player but got more DVD’s instead, just buy it yourself! And if you wanted cowboy boots but got house slippers instead, go to www.bootbarn.com and buy it yourself! If you’re looking for that great after Christmas sale, look no further. Bootbarn.com has great prices on selected boots from some of the top brands and you never know, we may just have your perfect gift to yourself. Go ahead, you’re worth it!
